OLED Screen Test

On an OLED, every pixel makes its own light, and pixels that show the same thing for hours can age unevenly. Most of the time you won't notice. On a flat field of gray or colour, faint ghosts, tint shifts or banding are much easier to spot. This page steps through those slides full screen, so you can see what your panel looks like.

What people use the oled test for

Look for burn-in or image retention

A faint outline of a taskbar, a keyboard, a channel logo or a game HUD shows up most clearly on gray and on solid colours.

Check a new or second-hand phone, TV or laptop

It's worth looking at flat fields early, while you can still compare the panel with what you expected.

Spot uneven tint and banding

Dark gray is where OLED panels most often show patches of colour tint or visible steps.

How to use the oled test

  1. 1Turn off bright lights nearby and set the display to the brightness you normally use.
  2. 2Press F, or use the Fullscreen button.
  3. 3Step through the slides: pure black, gray steps, then red, green, blue and white. Tap or use the arrow keys to move on, or let them advance on their own.
  4. 4On each slide, look for outlines, darker or tinted patches, and steps in what should be an even field.
  5. 5Seen a ghost? Try the burn-in fixer, then come back and check again.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check for OLED burn-in?+

Run the gray and solid-colour slides at your normal brightness in a dim room. Look for outlines of things that usually stay on screen, such as status bars, navigation buttons or logos.

Burn-in vs image retention?+

Image retention is a temporary ghost that fades on its own. Burn-in is permanent, caused by pixels ageing unevenly. If a ghost is still there after a while, and after a run of the burn-in fixer, it's more likely burn-in.

Why does gray show tint on OLED?+

At low brightness, small differences between pixels are easier to see, so a dark gray field can show faint patches of green, magenta or another tint. Some unevenness at very low gray levels is common.

Can burn-in be fixed?+

Temporary image retention often fades, and the burn-in fixer is built for that. Permanent burn-in is physical ageing of the pixels, and no software can undo it. This page helps you see what's on your screen; it can't diagnose or repair it.
