Softbox Light — Soft Screen Lighting Panel
Softness in lighting is really about size: the larger a light source is relative to the subject, the softer the shadow edge it casts. A monitor is already a large, diffuse, evenly-lit rectangle — which is to say a monitor is basically a softbox that happens to also show you email.
What people use the softbox light for
Soft key light for portraits
Bring a bright panel close to a face and the shadow edges go soft and gradual. Pull it away and they harden. That single control gets you most of the way to studio lighting.
Even light for flat-lay and product shots
A large soft source above a small object gives you clean, gradient-free light with no harsh specular hotspots — the standard look for catalogue photography.
Fill light for a second source
Use a dimmed softbox panel on the shadow side to lift the darkest areas without creating a competing second shadow.
Bounce for a whole-room wash
Point the panel at a white wall or ceiling instead of the subject. The wall becomes an enormous source and the light gets softer again.
How to use the softbox light
- 1Open the page on the largest display you can spare — bigger panel, softer light.
- 2Set the warmth to match the room and the falloff for how much edge feathering you want.
- 3Move the panel closer for softer shadows, further away for harder, more defined ones.
- 4Press F for fullscreen so no browser chrome creates a dark stripe in the light.
- 5Set the display's own brightness to maximum for the most output.
Frequently asked questions
What actually makes a light 'soft'?+
Apparent size. A source that is large as seen from the subject wraps light around them and produces a gradual shadow edge; a small source produces a hard one. That is why moving a panel closer softens it — closer means larger in the subject's view.
