Touch Screen Test

A touch screen can look perfect and still miss touches in one patch, or register touches nobody made. This page shows you what your screen reports. Every finger leaves a trail, a counter shows how many touches are down at once, and a grid fills in as you drag so any area that doesn't respond stands out. It runs in your browser on phones, tablets and touch laptops, and works with a mouse too.

What people use the touch screen test for

Checking for dead zones

If typing or swiping fails in one spot, fill the grid and see whether that area responds at all.

Counting multi-touch points

Put several fingers down and see how many touches the screen reports at once, and the most it managed.

Checking a phone or tablet before you buy or sell it

A couple of minutes of drawing and grid-filling covers the whole screen.

How to use the touch screen test

  1. 1Open the page and press F or tap Fullscreen, so the test covers as much of the screen as possible. The screen stays awake while the page is open.
  2. 2Draw with one finger, then several. Each touch leaves its own trail, and the counter shows how many touches are active right now.
  3. 3Put down as many fingers as you can at once. Max touches keeps the highest number reached.
  4. 4Switch to the grid and drag slowly across every cell, edge to edge. Cells fill as you touch them.
  5. 5Tap Clear to wipe the trails and the grid and start again.

How to read the results

  • A cell that won't fill after several slow passes is an area where your screen didn't report a touch. Remove any case or screen protector, clean the glass and try again before drawing conclusions.
  • Edges on phones: many phones use swipes from the edges for system gestures, and some browsers can't go fully full screen. A gap right at the edge may just be the system taking that swipe.
  • Lines or dots appearing where you didn't touch are ghost touches: the screen reporting touches nobody made.
  • Max touches is the highest number of touches your browser reported. Your device, operating system or browser can all limit it.
  • This test shows what your device reports to the browser. It can't tell you why a problem happens or whether it's a hardware fault. For the display itself, run the dead pixel test or the monitor test patterns; for retention, the burn-in fixer. Want a prank instead? Try the fake cracked screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test my iPhone or Android touch screen?+

Open this page in your phone's browser, draw with one finger and then several, and fill the grid. On iPhone, add the page to your home screen if you want to see more of the screen without browser bars.

What are ghost touches?+

Touches the screen registers when nobody is touching it. On this page they appear as trails or grid cells you didn't draw.

How many touch points does my screen support?+

Put down as many fingers as you can and read Max touches. That's the most your device reported in this browser. It may differ in other apps.

Is a dead zone a hardware fault?+

Not always. Cases, screen protectors, dirt, moisture and system edge gestures can all stop touches registering. If an area still won't fill after you've ruled those out, a repair shop or the manufacturer can check the hardware.
